Dubrovnik, Croatia: Facts for the traveler

Money: Credit cards are widely accepted. There are plenty of ATMs around the town. The local currency is the Croatian Kuna, but in many locations you will be able to pay in Euros.

 Airport & Airlines: Dubrovnik has an international airport. It is located twelve miles from the city’s center, and there are buses that connect the terminal with the city’s bus station. British Airways (London), Austrian Airlines (Vienna), Croatian Airlines (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt), Iberian Airlines (Madrid) and Lufthansa (Munich) have direct flights to Dubrovnik. You can also fly to Zagreb, Croatia’s capital and take a domestic flight. Croatian Airlines has daily flights (one hour) from Zagreb to Dubrovnik. Air France, British Airlines, Delta Airlines, KLM and Lufthansa are some international carriers that fly to the Croatian capital.

 Security: Croatia has a low crime rate. It is a safe place to travel but be aware that some areas around Dubrovnik are still mined from the years of the conflict.

 Accommodations: The Pucic Palace located inside the walls of the Old Town (www.thepucicpalace.com); the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik just outside the Old Town; Bellevue Hotel (www.hotel-bellevue.hr); Grand Villa Argentina (www.gva.hr) located a five minutes walk from the Old Town. The cost can vary significantly depending on the time of the year: expect higher prices between June and September (peak season) than from October to May (low season)

 Restaurants: Located right next to the Old Town, “Nautika” is one of the top restaurants with great seafood and a stunning view. If you don’t want to leave the city walls, check the terrace of “Proto” restaurant on the corner of Siroka Street and Vara, in the heart of the Old Town, with fish and meat specialties. On Dubrovnik’s fortress, “Gil’s” is a hip restaurant/lounge with contemporary décor, beautiful ocean views and excellent (yet pricy) “fusion cuisine”. Although not in Dubrovnik, Mali Ston and its Restaurant “Kapetanova Kuca” or “Captain’s House” (www.ostrea.hr) is worth mentioning due to its proximity to the city and exceptional seafood.
