One week itinerary in Myanmar

There is so much to see and do in Myanmar! The country is opening to tourism and the possibility to travel independently is finally a reality. So if you have more time, go to the off the beaten track and spend more time in this amazing gem of Southeast Asia. Explore!

For those who don’t have much but a week, here it is what I did.

Day 1: Arrival in Yangon. (I flew from Bangkok, Thailand, with Thai Air Asia).

Day 2: Exploring Yangon

  • Visit the 2,000-plus-year-old Sule Pagoda
  • At twilight, head to Shwedagon Pagoda.
  • Bogyoke Aung San Market is a massive bazaar that houses everything from puppets and wood carvings to tapestry to brightly-colored fabrics and the local’s favorite longyi’s
  • Visit Myanmar’s most revered reclining Buddhas at Chaukhtatgyi Paya.

Day 3 : Depart Yangon to Bagan

Explore the amazing temples of Bagan. Some recommended are: ShwezigonDhammayangyi, and the off the beaten track Gubyaukgyi.

Day 4: Explore Bagan

Day 5: Day trip to Mt. Popa

It is about 90 minutes away from Bagan. Have lunch or dinner at Popa mountain resort or Mt. Popa Lodge for dramatic views of the Mt. Popa temple.

Day 6: Inle Lake

Depart Bagan to Heho. Plus 1 hr drive to Inle Lake.

Visit the Karen long-neck women and the floating market. Rent a boat to the Indein Village and the Ywa Ma floating village.

Day 7: Either stay extra day in Inle Lake, or return to Yangon to leave Myanmar.

PS: If you have to choose one place to visit in Myanmar, definitely Bagan is the must-see.
